The story behind the name Nommo
The Nommos are mythological ancestral spirits, worshiped by the Dogon tribe of Mali.
They are usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures.
The Dogon tribe believed that the Nommos were inhabitants of a World circling the star Sirius.
They descended from the sky in a vessel accompanied by fire and thunder.
After arriving, the Nommos created a reservoir of water and subsequently dove into the water.
They were aquatic… more to the point amphibious.
They could walk and talk and live on the earth but they could also live in an aquatic environment.
The Dogons believe that the Nommos will return to the Earth one day.
